Snapshot 26 No.260-269
269. Surface tension

Amenbo (pond-skater) and its shadow.
At a pond of Funabasi Andersen Park today.
Amenbo's manner of getting buoyancy with surface tension is better observed by watching its shadow cast on this type of shallow pond.

268. Japanese beetleH

"Mame-kogane" perched on the leaf of "Waru-nausubi".
At a park during evening walk with Jiro yesterday.
Low photo quality, my fault.
(camera is a cellphone with 240 x 320 pixels)
This creature appeared in the USA about 100 years ago, and, probably by the lack of its natural predator, has inflicted a heavy loss there. The local name is Japanese beetle.
In recent years, it landed on the European continent and is utterly abhored. A concise report (in Japanese) by Kyodo News is
here.

267. From the hell to the paradise

The photo was taken under the eave of the kitchen where a ladder is normally laid down. Today, upon removing the ladder, I found many cone-shaped pits made by ant-lions, called here "ari-jigoku" (ant-hell).
As their prey are to be not so abundant around here, probably it will take many years for the larvae to mature.
As its adult insect "usuba-kagerou" (mayfly) resembles dragongly, it is commonly called "gokuraku-tombo" (paradise dragonfly). Thus it is to go from the hell to the paradise.

265. Intense heat and electricity
The photo shows Funabashi station north exit around noon today. Humidity is so high that the distant view is hazy.
Wondering if the power is sufficient, I checked the demand-supply data at TEPCO website. As in the screen shot, the predicted demand is 54.4 GW, about 90 % compared to the supply capacity of 60.2 GW. Looks like all right. Its site is
here.

264. Welcome heat wave

The cactus, which lower half like a tree trunk was cut off last year, bloomed today.
Looks like it has waited for this intense heat.

263. Yikes!! Imperial Rule Restoration
The photo is from a flier of the new 4th generation Jimny.
It returned to its original square design. Moreover, rain gutters on the roof returned too!
Present-day cars do not have the gutter and impose a great difficulty on the installation of radio antennas. Those who operate ham radio will certainly welcome this design.

262. World cup 2018

The photo is from the sports page of yesterday's Yomiuri News. The picture is by INAGAKI Masanori cameraman of its Chubu office . I am always impressed with the photos taken by newspaper cameramen.
Among the new players, I name, as the most brilliantly worked players in the 4 games,
Gaku and Shouji.

261. The end of the wet season

As it looks the rainy season ends, I dismounted the sijyukara's house which fulfilled its role this year too.
9 months since the last October gradually warp the roof plate facing the south, as in the photo.
After the wet season, the warp progresses even more.
So I have made it a practice, for the last 10 or so years, to keep the box indoor during the summer months and put it back to the place by making the warped plate upside down.

260. JFA emblem / Once upon a time, 3-leg crow - -

Soccer World Cup has started.
The left is new and the 5th generation emblem of Japan Football Association on its website. The right is the emblem of JFA Chiba chapter, I used long before.
This 3-leg crow is called Yata-no-Karasu (large and broad crow) said to serve to Kumano Shrines along the Kumano Old Pilgrim Roads.
By some reason, Kumano 3 shrines are very much associated with kemari (court-style kickball).
Fujiwara-no-Narimiti, a brilliant player of kemari which became immensely popular among the Kyoto court nobles at Heian period (400 years in 8th-12th century), payed visits to Kumano Shrines more than 50 times for prayer of his kemari performance improvement and displayed his superb performaces in front of the shrines for dedication to the Kumano deties.
He is also said to be good at both sports and studies and had a close relationship with the monk Saigyou (known as a master of waka, a traditional poem form).
Even today, JFA people and national team players pay visits to the Kumano Shrines.
